Actor Gary Burghoff was the drummer for the band. The group opened in the Sahara Hotel and Casino lounge in Las Vegas for three months; because Carter was under 21 , she had to pass through the kitchen.Carter was a student at Arizona State University. She was named "Most Talented" and decided to get into music. Carter attended an audition in the year 1970, and did a the tour of The Garfin Gathering's bandleader Howard (Speedy), Garfin. Their first show with each other was held at the Holiday Inn Chinatown, a San Francisco hotel so new that there was no sidewalk entryway. They performed mostly for hotel staff and guests, who parked their cars underground. The Garfin Gathering toured the Nevada "Silver Circuit" and performed shows in most of Nevada's casinos and lounges that were located between Lake Tahoe, Carson City, Reno, and Las Vegas. Carter decided to quit the Garfin Gathering for acting, and returned to Arizona in 1972.
