Anita Saarkessian

Anita Sarkeesian was born in Canada and raised in the United States. She has worked as an editor since the year 1995. She is the founder of Feminist Frequency the website which provides commentary and videos on portrayals of women in popular cultural. Anita Sarkeesian is an award-winning Canadian-American feminist media critic as well as blogger. She is the founder and director of executive for Feminist Frequency which is an education non-profit site that examines the representation of women in pop media narratives. In her efforts to break down stereotypes related to women in popular culture, she has also been working on issues related the targeted harassment women and other classes of people on the internet. Sarkeesian, who holds an MA in Social and Political Thinking at York University, is a popular public speaking. She has delivered speeches at TEDxWomen's XOXO Festival and the United Nations Broadband Working Group for Gender. At a young age Sarkeesian was captivated by issues of gender identity as well as feminist ideas. As a student, in 2009, she launched her Feminist Frequency Website. The ambitious lady planned to start an internet-based program that would examine the gender roles in games however, she was also the subject of an online campaign to harass her. However the attack could be a deterrent, but it only strengthened her resolve as a feminist critic of media. Her notable contributions to the field of feminist were recognized by a variety of awards. Anita Sarkeesian is an award nominated media critic as well as the co-founder of Feminist Frequency an educational non-profit that explores the representations of women in popular media stories.
